Recently, the directors of the well-received video gaming documentary ‘King of Chinatown’ premiered their new project on Blue Arts Media(B.A.M. Radio)’s Same Night Tonight broadcast on Ustream. The trailer for this new project featured Community Effort Orlando’s very own Alex Jebailey as he took the reins in making CEO 2011 one of the largest major events in the Evolution 2011 championship circuit with over 800 entrants, almost triple the attendants of what CEO had the previous year. The preview trailer also focused on DMG’s own Jason Laboy who, at the same event, announced that Mad Catz, the leading brand in gaming accessories and peripherals, would be sponsoring the fighting game brand Dominion Method Gaming.

So, again, Psycho Crusher Productions is going to take another shot at capturing the competitive fighting game community. It seems, though, that this time around, the directors are going to be focusing on the community as a whole and the pro players that have made a name for themselves rather than just one rising star (read: Justin Wong; King of Chinatown). This is a pretty big task to take on, but it’s going to be a win-win situation for PCP and the FGC if it really does take off. So what else needs to be done? Publicity. Hype. Once the higher-ups (the more popular and reputable sources for video gaming news, misc.) get behind this brilliant idea, it’s going to be smooth sailing for the innovative documentary, GAM3R. The benefits for the competitive fighting game community are many. Here are some reasons why this series, along with the support of gaming websites (pointing the fingers at YOU, IGN) could help us grow because, despite how close-knit we are, we’re still pretty underrated as a whole.

Exposure - If we, the competitive fighting game community, are exposed to other competitive video gaming communities as well as casual gamers, our chances of becoming well-known become exponentially greater.

Recognition - With more exposure comes more opportunity. Video game publishers and developers will notice us as taking their video games to a whole new level with fierce competition and social bonding over such video games.

Sponsorships - With brands such as NamcoBandai, Mad Catz, and Atlus becoming more in-tune with the competitive gaming community, hopefully other developers and publishers will follow suit.

Strength In Numbers - Once everybody catches a glimpse of what the competitive fighting game community is, how it’s run, the key players in keeping the community strong, and the amount of fun one can have by just interacting with gamers just like them, it’s going to be no surprise that casual gamers (and even non gamers who just want to dabble in this type of thing) will want to join our ranks as one of the fastest-growing competitive video gaming communities in the world.

Bigger Events – So if and when most of the previous stipulations fall in line, that will only lead to bigger and better things for the FGC and the people who fully stand by us 100%. We already know that the Evolution Championship Series is one of the largest tournaments in the world, if not the largest. Now let’s make that even bigger than ever. More entrants, more money involved. Hell, even live television broadcasts and instant coverage of what’s basically the grandest stage of them all, the Wrestlemania of fighting games! …Well, a guy can dream, right?

Togetherness - As I said before, interaction with people just like us leads to new-found friendships. A community that plays together, stays together. And the more people we have on our side, the more people that we will have things in common with. <3

Togetherness, Pt.2 - Not only can we find similarities with people of the FGC, but we can interact and befriend people of other gaming communities, as well (inb4 ‘eSports’ chant). We want the ‘foreigners’ (for lack of a better word) to embrace us, right? So it’s only right that we do the same to them; embrace and appreciate what the other communities do, as well.

Opportunity – this is a situation is an unknown one, to us and everyone who is actively involved in the growth of the FGC. That is the exciting part. The unknown factor, that can bring in unlimited opportunities for the fighting gaming community to grow and in turn, grow with the mainstream media with other pop cultures icons.

Thinking outside of the box – At every tournament. At every venue. At every event. All over the US and around the world, how the FGC is being presented is going over leaps and bounds. It’s only a matter of time, when we, the FGC, will be standard when hosting, competing and presenting of how competitive gaming will evolve.

The Future – This is what the FGC is all about. The future in competitive gaming. The future of our community and what sort of impacts we will make in the upcoming years. The future where fighting games will become the norm of every competitive league in the WORLD!

So, in all honesty, it all comes back to publicity. As far as we’ve come since the fighting game genre existed (remember arcades? yeah, me neither), we’re still not out there just yet. With the help of Psycho Crusher Productions and their new series GAM3R, along with the support of major gaming websites across the world wide web, we could achieve our goal at becoming one the largest and most recognized competitive gaming community in the world.

This is bigger than you guys probably think. The host and coordinator of the GVN Winter Brawl, Summer Jam, and Northeast Championship (NEC) tournament series has made his way to the papers. Eric Small, also known by the fighting game community as Big E, was the center of the article Using Games to Reduce Violence in the Philly Inquirer today. This well-written piece was composed with the non-gamer in mind; the type of people who would disregard the good effects that video games (such as violent fighting games) could have on players casual and competitive alike. Take a look at this small segment from the page itself:

… [He] took his childhood passion for gaming and parlayed it into international tournaments held right here in Philly. Next up is Winter Brawl 6, Feb. 18 and 19 at the Sheraton Suites Philadelphia Airport, where Small expects more than 1,000 gamers to take it out on each other – but only on the video screens.

“Never had a problem,” says Small, who is as affable as he is a physical contradiction to his name. “I have security at the door to make sure nobody walks out with a PlayStation, but [the competition] is all friendly arguing and bickering.”

It was rather a big surprise for the Inquirer when they decided to pop their head inside the University Family Fun Center in University City. It was a good thing they did, though, because no one outside the video game hobbyists would know the benefits of these types of games. In a blatant way, it’s a rather comforting a stress-relieving task when it comes to beating your opponent to a pulp in a fictitious setting rather than coming to blows in actual reality.

This is a really important day in the fighting game community because it shows other non-gaming enthusiasts what we’re all about. In a controlled setting we’re all about playing hard and playing to win, and we leave our frustrations on the TV screen. Banter may come into play, but by no means are we savages because of it; we ARE a competitive scene, after all. We’re getting more exposure by the moment, and this just takes it to another level, with a very positive influence, to boot. Read the full article here: http://www.philly.com/philly/columnists/annette_john-hall/20120203_Annette_John-Hall__Using_video_games_to_reduce_violence.html

This might be as a shock but this isnt the first time we endorse someone for a good cause.

I’m sure that some of our DMG players will be submitting their own videos, however, DMG will like to endorses someone who really looks out for the community and have some of the same goals as DMG, that someone is Alex JeBailey.

He is the tournament organizer for CEO that is held every year in June and for the second year in a row; this event is part of “The Road to Evo”. I for one cannot wait to attend this event. I missed the first one but I will not be missing the second one.

So we would like to official announce our endorsement for Alex Jabailey to be a part of Team Street Fighter on Cross Assault.

GL Alex and we will be cheering for you!

Be sure to follow Alex on Twitter and get Jebaited!!!!!

Philski along with the team from Bifuteki, has played an important role in DMG since day one. We cannot stress enough how much we value their friendships, let alone, what they have done to help grow DMG. Philski is an awesome photographer and you can catch him at every major event, taking photos not only of DMG players but the entire FGC, the true stars of these tournaments. Not to mention, he was the one that bought some of the best crowd reaction showing some of the most hyped ending in the FGC history. You are able to view some his work on his own website, Bifuteki or on Facebook.

Only one more day away from the official street release date of Namco’s critically-acclaimed 3D fighter, Soulcalibur V! If you haven’t been up to speed on the changes since Soul Calibur IV (or rather its predecessor, Broken Destiny), you’re in for a big surprise; the Soulcalibur series is back, and even better than ever, adding even more depth to virtually anything the developers could get their hands on.

The Soul Gauge used in previous iterations has now taken a step forward in depth and ‘evolved’ into the Critical Gauge. This new gauge is strikingly similar to ‘super gauges’ used in most fighting games, and bears the most resemblance to Street Fighter IV’s super gauge in the respect that the Critical Gauge has four (4) segments, each representing 25% of the full bar of meter. You can have up to two (2) full bars of the Critical Gauge stocked at once, and you can use the meter to perform a variety of maneuvers. I’ll give you guys a quick rundown before we get to some of the fun stuff:

1. Guard Impact. This game mechanic has been tweaked quite a bit since the previous iteration of Soulcalibur. The good news is that you only have to input one way to repel all normal attacks (rather than attempting to guess whether your opponent will hit high or low). The tradeoff to this is that this requires 25% of your Critical Gauge, and this input for the guard impact being changed to Back+ABK, ‘back’ meaning that you have to hold the d-pad/joystick lever away from your opponent while inputting the button commands.

2. Brave Edge: Now you can think of this maneuver as an EX attack. This move takes up 50% of the Critical Gauge, and the properties of the moves (whether it’s guard/equipment-breaking or unblockable) varies from character to character.

3. Critical Edge: The Ultra Combo of Soulcalibur V. These moves drain a complete bar (100%) of the CG, and some of the Crit. Edges can be comboed into or can be used to continue the combos. From video that I’ve seen, most critical edge’s take away 25-30% of the opponent’s life bar.

Another thing about the critical gauge to note is that when the opponent only needs one round to win the match, the losing character gains a meter boost to help give him an edge in combat. This doesn’t go in single-round matches, but is found to be the case in best 2/3 or 3/5 rounds in a single match.

Other system changes I want to touch on are the added ability to ‘quick-step’ and ‘just guard’. Quick-stepping is performed by either tapping 88 or 22 (rather, up-up or down-down) on the control lever. This allows you to swiftly dodge an opponent’s vertical (B) attack and recover with enough time to counter with an attack of your own. This will add a whole level of mind-reading your opponent to the game, hopefully adding up to fast-paced matches.
Just Guard is the spiritual successor to the older iterations’ Guard Impact. When you press the guard button (G) just before the opponent’s attack lands, the character will flash blue. With the Just Guard mechanic, the guarding player will be locked in guardstun for a shorter amount of time than usual, allowing the player to launch a counterattack.

If these new quirks don’t interest you quite enough to get out and buy the game already, then just watch the plethora of YouTube videos to be uploaded by DMG, as well as other people when SCV hits shelves TOMORROW!
